About Miles Ahead

Most runners I meet have already tried something. Rest. Some exercises they found online. Another PT.

And they wind up sitting across from me because none of it fully worked.

Part of the reason is fragmentation. Your PT doesn't have a background in run coaching. Your coach doesn't know your injury history. Nobody is looking at the whole picture.

I built Miles Ahead because runners deserve to work with a provider who understands the whole picture.

Whether you come in for physical therapy, coaching, or strength training, you're working with someone who understands how all three connect.

That context changes the quality of care you get, regardless of what you're here for.

Meet Chris

I'm Dr. Chris Herbs, founder of Miles Ahead, Doctor of Physical Therapy, NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, and RRCA-certified running coach.

I grew up in upstate New York, and was always an active kid, mainly playing hockey and soccer. Eventually, I picked up running in high school, and never really stopped. Nearly 20 years, nine marathons, four Boston qualifications, and a 2:53 marathon PR later, I'm still at it.

I became a physical therapist because I love exercise, problem-solving, and working with people. Getting to know someone deeply, understanding what running means to them specifically, and helping them find their way back to it is incredibly rewarding. It doesn't get old.

I also know what it's like to lose running entirely. I live with an autoimmune disease called ankylosing spondylitis. I've dealt with this since childhood, but a flare-up in 2021 left me incapacitated for months as it attacked joints throughout my body. I went from preparing for marathons to wondering whether I'd ever walk normally again let alone run. I'm back now, with my symptoms managed by medication, and running is part of my life again.

So, when a patient tells me they've lost hope, or that they don't recognize themselves without their running, I don't have to imagine what that's like. I've been there. And I know how much it matters to find your way back.

If you're a runner who needs help, it would be a genuine privilege to work with you.

How Miles Ahead Works

Physical therapy, run coaching, and strength training for runners, with one provider who understands how all three connect. Whether you need one service or all three, Miles Ahead is here to support you from rehab to race day.

Care at Miles Ahead is one-on-one, 50 to 60 minutes, every session. No aides. No generic handouts. No 15-minute follow-ups while your PT manages three other patients.

That level of individualized care isn't possible within the traditional insurance model. So Miles Ahead operates outside of it.

Most runners are seen every one to four weeks rather than multiple short visits per week. Sessions are longer, more focused, and designed to integrate directly into your training. The goal is meaningful progress between visits, not dependency on the clinic.

If you haven't met your deductible, you may already be paying close to full price for insurance-based PT. Because sessions at Miles Ahead  are longer and strategically spaced, many runners use fewer total visits while making faster progress. You'll always know your exact cost upfront. No surprise bills.

Insurance often limits visits for running injuries and prioritizes short-term symptom management. Running may not be a medical necessity to your insurance company. It is to us.

Miles Ahead tends to work best for runners who want highly individualized care, are training for a specific race or goal, have a recurring injury that keeps coming back, or feel stuck after traditional PT.
